Who We Are

Ontario Canvas Company is the culmination of three generations of marine canvas fabricators. Originally started on Lake Ontario by Franklin Minor in 1947 after returning from World War II where he served in the US Navy. In the 1990s Franklin’s grandson, Mark moved the business to Seattle after taking it over from his father, Ron. For the past thirty years, Mark and his dedicated team have specialized in creating high quality products that offer protection from the elements while incorporating sleek and functional design.

What We Do

We offer custom canvas solutions for vessels of all shapes and sizes. Over the years, we have become known for our exceptional work and creative approach to the unique challenges of protecting boats and their crew from the variable coastal weather in the Pacific Northwest. In addition to specializing in marine canvas, we also work on restaurant patios, recreational vehicles and other canvas projects. Our commitment to craftsmanship and serving the needs of our clients is what makes us stand out.

Where We Work

Our main workshop is located on the historic Duwamish River way in the boat yard at South Park Marina. We also are equipped to travel to marinas and private docks in the Greater Seattle area with our mobile canvas service.

Our Services

Powerboats:

We create custom canvas for powerboats using Sunbrella canvas to protect everything from your skiff to the flybridge of your yacht. Specializing in all season covers that offer protection from the elements with easy to install designs.

Sailboats:

Marine canvas has its history deeply rooted in sailing vessels. Whether you are looking for a cockpit enclosure, sail cover, dodger, or even a sunshade we offer custom designs for your needs and your vessel. From a 8 foot sailing skiff to sailing yachts we can do it all.

Helmsman Trawlers:

Ontario Canvas Company is the bespoke canvas fabricator for Helmsman Trawlers on the West Coast. Of course, we work on all types of large yachts, but you can count on the same quality  and level of service that earned us the trust of Helmsman Trawlers.

House Boats:

Seattle has a deep connection to the houseboat community. While some of these floating homes resemble the hard surfaced exteriors of their land locked cousins, they suffer from the same elements as the boats around them. That is why Ontario Canvas Company is a trusted source of awnings and covers for these specialized projects.

Everything Else:

Many of our customers are happy to learn that we fabricate and repair canvas for:

  • Recreational Vehicles
  • Travel Trailers
  • Food Trucks
  • Restaurants
  • Vehicle Covers
  • And just about anything else that needs protection from the wind, sun, rain or other environmental conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "Custom Canvas" mean?
We do not work off of premade patterns or layouts. All our products are custom fit to your unique vessel. This is a multistep process: we come to your boat to measure and pattern, return to our shop where we create the product from the pattern and then return to your vessel for final fit and installation. Even between vessels of the same make there is enough variance that premade patterns are not one size fits all. That is the difference in the quality and fit of custom canvas.

Seattle, Lake Washington, Mercer Island, Des Moines, Tukwila, Bellevue, Tacoma, Burien, Rainier Beach, Kent, SeaTac, Ballard, Fremont, Alki and West Seattle, South Park, Renton, Harbor Island, Lake Union, South Seattle and more. We are always happy to make arrangements to bring your vessel to our guest moorage at South Park Marina if you are currently located outside our normal service area.

Yes, on a case by case basis. The determining factors are generally the age and condition of the canvas. If the material is too old and brittle to take new seams or clear vinyl we will be happy to work up a free estimate for the cost of a new replacement. We also require that any canvas brought to our shop for repairs be in clean condition as to not contaminate our shop and future projects.
We use high quality materials that are the leading standards in the industry including Sunbrella material and binding, Strataglass Clear Vinyls and UV resistant thread with premium stainless steel hardware. Combined all these offer high performance for marine applications meant to last for years to come.
We offer a 5% discount to any vessel that comes to our yard on a trailer or makes use of the guest moorage available here at South Park Marina where our shop is located.
We do not offer canvas cleaning services. We recommend reaching out to quality yacht detailing outfits that are familiar with the cleaning needs of Sunbrella and Clear Vinyl materials.
We partner with our sister business, Burien Upholstery, for all marine upholstery applications and would be happy to get an estimate put together for your project.
Yes, we have worked on a wide variety of projects from food truck awnings, privacy screening for decks, enclosures for outdoor seating at restaurants and even mobility slings for folks who need assistance transferring out of bed to a wheelchair. We are always happy to talk about custom projects and how to build them.
No. We build the frames and bows for boat tops and dodgers. We recommend Mark at Northwest Railmakers for any custom railings.

What Others Are Saying
About Ontario Canvas Company:

I have had them fix three pieces of canvas for my boat (21ft bow rider) and all three times it has turned out great. One was a larger fix where the main cover for the passenger area had ripped down the middle (thank you seagulls and otters). That was two years ago and their fix has stood the test of time. Their craftsmanship is obvious and I could not be happier.

Opal exceeded our expectations on our SeaRay canvas. She made sure she delivered in a timely fashion and was competitively priced and friendly.

Ontario Canvas fabricated and installed the Bimini top, fly bridge enclosure and pilothouse window covers on our new Helmsman 38E Pilothouse trawler. The workmanship and attention to detail are superb. Mark and Opal worked diligently to get the work done on a very tight commissioning schedule with another extensive canvas installation underway on the same dock. They knew we were anxious to get underway and finished ahead of our schedule. It is obvious why they are Helmsman Trawlers’ craftsmen of choice. Thanks for making a great boat even greater.
